Help us end Factory Farms. SWIVL curriculum specialists, with practicing classroom teachers, are developing teacher and parent standards-based curriculum materials on alternative food sources that are violencefree. Through these materials, children will learn accountable, responsible, and civil behaviors which will likely improve their academic skills and performance.
As a society, we are supporting a food industry that is as outdated as the Pony Express. We are feeding our children meat and dairy products filled with antibiotics, hormones and steroids. Millions of tax dollars are keeping factory farms alive when they are slowly killing U.S. citizens, not to mention the torture and murder of millions of innocent, feeling animals. Powerful scientific evidence shows that factory farm food increases the likelihood of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
Recently, the U.S. government determined that the factory farm meat served in our school cafeterias is dangerous to our children. Government and public health officials described flu as a major threat to US citizens, without mentioning one word, however, about factory farms and their role in causing this disease. The Congress and President Obama are advocating for health care reform, without examining the negative impact that factory farms have on our general welfare. Clearly, the overall health of US citizens would be better off on a plant-based diet. The United States could become a world leader for the plant-based industry which would improve our lives and create millions of new jobs.
While the SWIVL team believes the food we eat should be violencefree, this decision should be a matter of choice for each individual citizen and family. However, the government should not use tax dollars to support factory farms. Rather, our elected officials and policy makers should be examining the benefits of plant-based industries. Contact SWIVL with your ideas and suggestions for helping the U.S. move in this direction.
